In December, we are planning a get together at Kramer's in Buckhead. Kramer's has been called "the center of the universe", the "coolest place in the United States", and even "way, way, rad." If you are going to be in Atlanta in December and feel like have a (foreign owned) Bud with some old friends, vote for the date that works best for you. There will be no tests and no one there will know your real SAT score (Chris). So, come out and support a local business owned and operated by one of LHS's finest.

Vote on Date!

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "Former WCW wrestler Chase Tatum was found dead late Sunday afternoon of an apparent accidental drug overdose, his father said.

Tatum, 34, was recovering from back surgery 10 days earlier to repair a degenerative disc. His father, Roy Tatum of Kennesaw, said his son had been battling a painkiller dependence for years but had made plans to enter a rehabilitation facility in Miami." I remember Chase from middle school. He was a little but determined kid on the football field. He was also pretty good on a skateboard. After high school I saw him again and he wasn't the little kid from the football field, he was a gigantic wrestler. In the early 90's, he was a bouncer at Pat Hurley's in Buckhead and saved me from getting beat up on more than one occasion. He lived on the edge but was always a good guy. I know he'll be missed by many.

altChris is standing inside what will be his new restaurant/jazz club in downtown Maryville, Tennessee. He and a business partner are preparing to open the establishment and hope to serve their first customers at the end of the month. Chris will serve as executive chef. The paper says, "Henderlight is a pivotal part of what will make the restaurant a success." The restaurant will serve everything from Spanish dishes and French dishes to Italian and New Orleans cuisine. “What we’re trying to incorporate is the feeling you get from a jazz bistro,” said Henderlight.

For more information about the new restaurant and upcoming events, visit www.myspace.com/swanksjazz. Read the newspaper article here.

One of the truly unique people from our class was Duke Korey. I remember walking into Latin class our first day of freshman year and sitting next to Duke (he happened to be sitting next to my real target, Scarlett). Before too long, Duke, Brian Kirk, Brian Land, and I were cooking up conspiracy theories about whether or not Mr. Ewing was involved in secret gamma radiation experiments to turn himself into the Incredible Hulk. Soon we came to suspect that there were several Hulks among us and that Mr. Ewing was their leader! Of course, Duke was behind much of the rumors and speculation, leading Brian, Brian, and I to secretly wonder if Duke was in on it, too. Unfortunately, Duke didn't have the tell-tale signs of being a Hulk: messy hair, gap between front teeth, skin with greenish tint.

That's just a taste of what my friendship with Duke was like in high school. I had the memorable experience of sitting next to Duke in the gym when his name was called during the senior superlatives pep rally. You didn't have to be sitting next to him to recall him jumping to his feet, tearing off his trademark DUKAMANIA T-shirt and running up to the stage yelling something in a Machoman Randy Savage voice.

What's your favorite Dukamania memory?

After seven years of higher education, Jaysen Gillespie knew he was qualified to do at least one thing -- write a book of advice for college students. The idea came to him in December 1997 after he saw a row of books by the checkout counter at a store in his hometown, Atlanta. "There was Life's Little Instruction Book, The Job Hunter's Instruction Book, The Cat Lover's Instruction Book," says Gillespie, MA '96. "But nothing for college students."

So over the next six months, he wrote one. Last summer, 5,000 copies of The College Student's Instruction Book came off press. Subtitled "302 ways to make your college experience more rewarding," the book is a combination of earnestly obvious suggestions (No. 32: Go see campus speakers; No. 220: Back up important files); tongue-in-cheek entries (No. 88: Don't date both roommates); and useful maxims that will make you nod in agreement as you read (No. 70: Don't fret over $10 if you already owe $25,000; No. 206: Shut off your alarm before you leave for breaks).

"They're based on practical experience," says Gillespie, who did his undergrad years at Duke before coming to Stanford for a master's (and part of a PhD) in engineering-economic systems. One tip he took to heart -- No. 23: Be known as a source of good information.
